5Best Pocketable HD CamcorderJul 06, 2010
We've been using the HDR-TG1 for about a year on vacation trips, while sailing and hiking. In every respect it has proved to be an outstanding instrument. The HD videos it captures when displayed on a HD TV (a 40 in. Sony in our case) produces results that rival broadcast quality and sometimes exceed it. Yes, it's that good. In fact, it has now replaced our use of the SLR we formally took on trips. And why not, it weighs less, is more compact and can capture a scene more memorably than stills ever can. For example, on a recent trip to Paris we were standing on a bridge close to Notre Dame. To capture the full sense of being there I took a slow 360 pan that not only captured the movement of pedestrians and traffic along with their sounds, in Dolby quality, but also the barge traffic passing under the bridge. However, what gave the pan a special quality were the two old men I noticed while panning that were fishing from the river bank some 100 ft. from the bridge which I was able to fill the screen with by using the excellent zoom. When we got home and played it back on our TV it was simply spectacular. No SLR produced still could have captured anything like that. On the down side, while the audio is excellent, it's lack of provisions for effectively dealing with wind induced noise can be bothersome as is the difficulty in viewing the screen when in bright sun light. Other than that, this Sony Handycam has proved to be well worth its purchase.

I have owned this camera since December 2008. We bought it because we liked that it was compact and did video AND still images. It has been really great since my daughter was born we have taken tons of video and photos and it is compact so we never have an excuse to leave it behind. This past weekend (conveniently 3 months after the warranty ran out) we found that it would no longer take still photos. I used the manual to troubleshoot myself and nothing solved the problem. I contacted Sony and they walked me through some additional troubleshooting and that didn't solve it either. They said that I would need to send it in for repairs. I filled out the repair form online and it said that it would cost $171 at a minimum to send it in for repairs! I called a local place and they had the same type of pricing. I am extremely disappointed and now I feel that I am probably just better off buying a separate still camera and just using this for video rather than spending $170 plus to get it repaired. I am going to be even more upset if I am unable to capture my daughter's first steps because of this issue!

1Wow, what a waste of money!Jan 27, 2010
My video camera died right after the warranty expired! Now it will cost $171 just to have someone look at it. Beware! The quality is comparable to the flip. I could have bought many flips for the price of this video camera!

4Great portable camera. No so great indoors or in low light situationsDec 29, 2009
What's the point of having an HD camcorder if you don't use it? This unit is compact enough to carry everywhere so I can capture those random precious moments. Picture quality is sharp and it's a breeze to use. The videos come out amazing on my Sony HDTV. This is coming from someone who isn't exactly technically savvy. Two complaints though - 1) Shoots terribly in low light / indoor situations; & 2) The memory sticks are quite expensive. They use the Sony branded memory which carries a premium.

Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this camera to everyone except the avid videophile professional who is more focused on the technicals rather than having a convenient take anywhere piece of equipment.

4Cool camera but....Sep 18, 2009
It's a very high quality camera overall..but I have one complaint ; transferring files (videos) to PC.. That's a very very hard process for me..
