3Ipod Nano is not made for maintenance.Jul 18, 2011
By Russell Keller
Because of the very delicate nature of the internal components and connectors of the ipod nano it's not a good idea to try and do this yourself. As an electronic technician with twenty years of experience, I can with some credibility, say that the Nano is not made to be taken apart. Starting with the glued on end covers that have to be removed then restuck back into place after the battery replacement, moving on to the hair thin connectors and ribbon cables that need to be unplugged and replugged in to the micro-soldering needed to un-solder the old battery then re-solder the new one. If you do not have the right equipment, including optical magnification of some sort. I would not attempt the battery change. Even if you mananged to pull the guts out of the nano case, unsolder then resolder in the new battery you still have to stuff everything back inside. There is zero clearance on each side and there is sticky tape meant to be an electrical insulator that easily peels back and wants to jam when re-inserting the flexible and very delicate pc board. I gave it three stars because the product is OK but don't try this at home.

This battery is somewhat THICKER than the original. I am *very* experienced in electronics . . . and in re-assembly of my 2nd-gen nano, I unfortunately have now cracked TWO LCD screens, trying to cram this larger battery back into the case. When my 2nd replacement LCD screen arrives, I am going to use a dremel to clearance the inside of the case to make more room for this battery.

I would have expected this from maybe an UPGRADED 550 mAh version of the battery, (rather than a stock-equivalent 400 mAh) - the size difference is not quite obvious until you are into the re-assembly. If you measure with a machinist's calipers and compare to the old one, you can see the difference.

I can not yet comment on the actual power/recharge functionality of the product, as I am waiting on my replacement LCD screen to arrive. That's correct: I can't even say if this battery actually works.

3Ipod Nano 2nd Gen 8GB battery replaced - DNRMar 24, 2011

Just don't do it...unless you have the hands of a surgeon and fingers of a slow loris. This battery seems like it should work if put into its rightful position with the right connections, but first you have to navigate through the nano jungle of tiny screws and fragile parts. Get your 10% discount from Apple instead. If you have succeeded in installing this, you're a better man(person/individual) than I am.

btw, word of caution if you do decide to embark on this journey; be careful of the online instruction you follow... ifixit instructions were my downfall. Oh sure, I can gently pry the connector up with a spudger, or as they put it "(or up, if you like, the connector is like LEGO® building blocks)" NO, no it is NOT like LEGO blocks... LEGO blocks do not tear into pieces when disconnecting.

Found an online tutorial about how to replace the battery, was easy to follow, the only problem was to put it back together, but with care now it's working again.

5Not easy to replace...Mar 09, 2011
By AZ Roadster "AZ Roadster"
I gave the product 5 stars because it worked fine but the replacement process was NOT easy. It isn't the product's fault but the designer's (Apple). IPod batteries were NOT designed to be replaced by anyone who doesn't have experience in such things. That said, though, the battery was built to spec.
